This of course is a personal choice. If you have experience on one or the other – you most likely will have your own preference.
If you are new to sailing the choice can be confusing, so here are some features/benefits of either:
More traditional and will heel to some degree with the wind. Will sail faster into the wind. More action and more fun to sail.
Sails flat and will have less motion both under sail and at anchor (if in a rolling harbour). More beam for the length creates more living space above and below deck. It is perhaps a better choice for younger children, large groups and anyone susceptible to motion sickness.
A bare boat charter is when you wish to handle a yacht yourself. Bare boat charters are available in Sail or Power Yachts from 31 to 65 feet. The Skipper of your crew will need to complete a short sailing resume questionnaire, which will be forwarded to the Yacht Management Base. Typically they are looking for about 5 years experience on a similar (or close to) sized yacht. A checkout Captain can always be hired for as little as one day – to help ease any initial concerns. Sometimes this is recommended just to familiarize a curious crew with an unfamiliar or larger yacht. Once behind the wheel for an hour or two, every yacht seems to feel like your own.
Provides a “Captain only” or “Captain with Cook” on boats 31’ to 65,’ giving you the largest selection of yachts. With “Captain only” charters you will have the freedom to visit shore side eateries, and will also be responsible for your own provisioning.
Larger yachts with a permanent crew (Captain and Cook) and includes provisions and beverages in the price. The crew usually lives aboard these yachts and they are spectacular hosts with infinite knowledge of their yachts and their sailing areas. Yachts in this category can range from 50’ – 200’+ and can accommodate larger groups, special events, and carry a variety of water toys such as Jetskis, kayaks, windsurfers, dive equipment and more.
